A BILL to amend the Code of West Virginia, 1931, as amended, by adding thereto a new section, designated §30-29-13, relating to requiring any newly appointed chief executive of a municipal law-enforcement agency to be a certified law-enforcement officer; and providing that current chief executives are unaffected by this requirement.

Be it enacted by the Legislature of West Virginia:

ARTICLE 29. LAW-ENFORCEMENT TRAINING AND CERTIFICATION.

§30-29-13. Chief executive requirements.

Notwithstanding any provision of this article to the contrary, beginning July 1, 2018 any person newly appointed to serve as the chief executive of a municipal law-enforcement agency must be a certified law-enforcement officer: Provided, That current chief executives are exempt from this requirement.

NOTE: The purpose of this bill is to require any newly appointed chief executive of a municipal law-enforcement agency to be a certified law-enforcement officer. The bill provides that current chief executives are unaffected by this requirement.
